UCSD DERConnect
5/08/23 - 6/09/23
The UCSD DERConnect Program is a pioneering initiative at the University of California, San Diego, aimed at advancing research and development in distributed energy resources (DER) with the use of Plug Load Controllers. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the program focuses on integrating renewable energy sources, enhancing grid resilience, and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
DERConnect leverages UCSD's state-of-the-art facilities and faculty to conduct cutting-edge research in energy storage, smart grid technologies, and micro- and macrogrid systems. The program fosters collaboration between academia, industry, and government agencies, providing a platform for innovation and knowledge exchange. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the DERConnect program aims to address critical challenges in the energy sector and contributes to a more sustainable and reliable energy future.

Overview of Tasks
Power Consumption
Log
The main focus of this internship was synthesizing a power consumption log of the devices within the USCD campus. This log would go on to be used as data for an algorithm to determine the peak time(s) of usage for individual devices.

Kleissl Lab Redesign
An additional project within the internship was to clean and redesign the derelict Kleissl Lab. Out of commission since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lab was in dire need of a reformation.
Education Posters & Schedule Sticker
An issue that was identified was the lack of education around the power consumption of devices, leading to increase and superfluous use. To combat this, posters educating about facts were created. A sticker showcasing a device's schedule were also designed.
